Have you looked at your teeth in pictures or in the mirror and wonder, I wish I could whiten my teeth but I don’t know how? Or who to go to? Maybe you think it is just too much work. We make teeth whitening easy. Teeth whitening is actually one of the easiest and cost-effective ways to have a better cosmetic smile. The dentists at Academy Dental Care are highly acclaimed and experienced doctors that have created the simplest way for their patients to love the way they smile.

What is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth Whitening is a quick and easy procedure that involves gentle teeth bleaching that can whitening the shade of your teeth. There are a number of options to whiten your teeth. The most popular method that delivers that best results are the combination of at home whitening with an in office KOR treatment. These whitening treatments only work on natural tooth enamel, so it is important to have one of our dentists partner with you to create a plan for any old fillings or crowns. Any other cosmetic treatments will be done after your whitening treatment so they will match your newly bleached teeth. Teeth Whitening is not permanent and a touch up may be needed every several years.

Here are some reasons why teeth whitening may be needed:

    • Effects of aging – the natural change in tooth color due to normal wear of outer tooth layer
    • Yellow or stained teeth due to oral hygiene
    • Stained teeth due to medication – Antibiotics, Antihistamines, and anti-hypertension medication can stain
    • Effects of smoking – smoking damages teeth and can impact hygiene that results in more buildup of plaque and the bacteria environment in your mouth
    • Diet choices – Whitening can remove stains from some of our beloved foods and drinks like Coffee, Tea, Sodas, Wine, blue berries, beets, popsicles, etc.
    • Special occasions – Weddings, class reunions, job interviews, speaking engagements
    • Boost self confidence – enhance quality of life by letting you have a more relaxed, comfortable smile
    • Non-surgical way to whiten teeth

Why Teeth Whitening Matters

Confidence is a feeling of self-assurance arising from one’s appreciation of one’s own abilities or qualities. For some people this can originate in the way they look. We hear stories from new patients about how they feel when they look at pictures or notice that they are uncomfortable being in front of people. We have noticed through our thousands of interactions with patients that having whiter teeth is the most requested wish when describing what they would like to improve about their smile.

Teeth are in constant contact with substances that enter your mouth. Teeth turn yellow or stain naturally over time as you age and can be accelerated with poor oral hygiene and certain types of medications. The food you eat can also be a factor in tooth staining. Coffee, tea, soda, soy sauce, and balsamic vinegar are some examples of foods that can stain your pearly whites. While it is advisable that we don’t eat or drink these substances, we know reality is we can’t cut out all the types of foods we like. What’s better is to brush or swish with water after eating. As we age, these substances can discolor teeth. Luckily, there are several ways to bring back a white smile.

How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

The stain on your teeth can be either extrinsic or intrinsic. Intrinsic stains can be deep within the dentin of your tooth or in the micro cracks in your teeth. Extrinsic stains are on the surface of your teeth. The ingredients that we use for teeth whitening contain either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. Both are whitening agents that penetrate your enamel to get to discolored molecules. Oxygen molecules from those agents react with the stained molecules and break the bonds that hold them together.

To change to the color of your teeth actually requires bleaching your teeth. This can have the effect of changing the color 3 to eight shades lighter. Professional in office bleaching use higher concentrations of hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide and a light to change the shade of your dentin. The at home whitening kits contain a lower level of agents but are applied for longer periods of time. Patients see the best results when at home whitening is combined with in office whitening.

Most whitening toothpastes use abrasives to remove surface stains. However, the inner dentin remains the same color and is where you get most of your tooth color. Enamel is translucent and these whitening aids can only change your shade 1 point on the shade scale.
