For years now, dentists have known that the health of your mouth can affect the health of your entire body. It is just one more reason the staff at Academy Dental Care wants to see our patients keep their teeth and gums in great shape!
One problem that can result from poor oral health is inflammatory disease attacking the rest of the body, a connection discussed in a recent article in the magazine Men’s Journal. Periodontal disease (also known as gum disease) can be serious, beyond the damage it can do to your smile. Not taking care of your teeth and gums can eventually lead to not just inflammatory disease but other serious health issues, such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and even erectile dysfunction.
When bacteria isn’t cleaned off the teeth by brushing and flossing every day, it starts to harden into plaque, which can only be removed with a professional dental cleaning. Plaque gives bacteria a place to grow, and when harmful bacteria multiplies, gum disease, and health problems that are even worse, can result.
The way that dentists addressed periodontal disease in the past is solely with a scaling and root planing treatment, which was done in a dentist’s office. Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning technique used to remove the plaque below the gums, and a planing smooths the tooth roots, so that bacteria has a difficult time sticking to them.
At Academy Dental Care, we care for our periodontal patients with a more updated and scientifically validated system by treating the whole health of the bacterial problem in the mouth. First, we use a special screening process to determine what kind of bacteria is causing the infection — not all bacteria in the mouth is dangerous, and some of it is actually good to have. We concentrate on removing this bad bacteria, and then we medicate the areas that has the gum infection. At the same time we will do a deep cleaning to remove the plaque that is present in the mouth and irrigate the infected areas. You can read more about the way we treat gum disease here.
Scaling and root planing is the most widely used procedure for periodontal disease, but alone is not able to address the root cause of the bacterial condition in the mouth that causes bone loss and loss of teeth. Deep cleanings clean the teeth, but it is a temporary fix, like trying to fix an oil leak in your car by just wiping away the oil with a rag. To truly fight periodontal disease you have to get rid of the bacteria — you have to fix the leak or the problem will just come back!
Gum disease can result in some serious problems if it isn’t taken care of, and that’s why at Academy Dental Care we do more than just clean the bacteria off — we get rid of the bad bacteria completely.
